The UNMAPPED PH campaign started out late September 2020 with the aim to map out those most underrepresented on the map. In a recent study by Thinking Machines (Map the Gap) just last June, they were able to provide visualization on OSM building footprint completion per barangay, town, province in the country. Furthermore, the team was able to identify 24 towns that do not have a single footprint on OSM. These towns represent more than 100,000 households or 500,000 individuals that are basically vulnerable just because they are not on the map.

Through the support of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team Community Impact Microgrants and the Jesse Robredo Foundation Be Like Jesse Microgrant, MapBeks jumpstarted the project to target 6 of the 24 towns. Initially, the team targeted 2 municipalities in Romblon and 4 in Maguindanao since we were able to get contact with these LGUs.

A part of the project wanted to put the LGBT representation in the forefront of the international mapping community. Three training were conducted with various LGBT organizations, individuals, and allies just last October. We were able to tap more than 20 LGBT and Ally organizations from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Aside from that we were also supported by other corporate mapping teams like Accenture and Telus.

From the previously targeted 6, we have completely validated 2 towns for building footprints - Ferrol and Paglat, and later for roads. 4 more have been completely mapped, while 5 others are within completion within this year under the #BikesforBeks Project. With the astounding support, help, and momentum from our partner organization, the team decided to open more tasks and recently launched 9 towns for the UNMAPPED PH competition in November. Aside from the data provision to the LGU, the team will also provide printed and digital hazard maps for their communities that they may use for reference. There are only 4 remaining towns that do not have a tasking project. The following map shows you the location and more information on the status of the project.
